In addition to the formal course work required for a degree, there are numerous other opportunities for students to become involved in pre-professional and social activities in the department. Washington has numerous natural resources, including sand, gravel and hard rock aggregate, minerals, and energy resources such as coal, oil and gas, and geothermal. Certain simple carbon compounds are treated in inorganic chemistry, including the oxides, carbon disulfide, the halides, hydrogen cyanide, and salts, such as the cyanides, cyanates, carbonates and hydrogencarbonates.

Volcanoes Near, Far and Really Far Away. Integrated, multi-science interpretations now represent the state of the art because of the detail and confidence they provide. Students may be dropped from the program if breaks in enrollment occur. Of particular note is the Centre’s close collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Nature, and local geophysics and mining companies. We particularly welcome inquiries from students with backgrounds in geology, geophysics, pure or applied physics, applied mathematics, and engineering.

We also explore the social and economic consequences of climate variations, e.g., on agriculture, water resources, and public health. Faculty of Earth Sciences is working to achieve a full range of scientific objectives according to educational policy-drawn. Bryan Travis, an expert in fluid dynamics, is author of the Mars global hydrology numerical computer model, or MAGHNUM, used for calculating heat and fluid transport phenomena. (MAGHNUM was previously used to model hydrological phenomena under freezing conditions on other planets, including Mars.) Travis advanced the MAGHNUM software with a variety of improvements and additional components into a new program, called ARCHY, a comprehensive Arctic hydrology model.
