This course will include frank, open and scientific discussions on topics that are often ignored due to culture stigma, but have a great impact on human health and wellness. The immense success of this book is due to its description of complex physiologic principles in language that is easy to read and understand. Under these conditions, the temperature of vital organs (i.e., heart, liver, brain) may be preserved at the expense of other organs. This finding was corroborated in an 88-hr TSD study with 19 healthy men and women in which circulating levels of IL-6 were elevated during TSD (47).

The curriculum is designed to lay the foundation for the clinical skills essential to the practice of medicine. Fieldwork can be expected in this course. Associated travel may be required and students are responsible for their own transportation. Early observations suggested an association between infectious processes and sleep. The Neurophysiology component consists of about 25 hours of lecture presentations by the faculty, about 25 hours of clinically-relevant small-group sessions and two series of active "Case-Based" learning sessions (totalling about 12 hours) in which the students develop learning issues and present the results of their search for information and their readings in relation to a clinical case.
