Commissars are often drawn from the ranks of these elite soldiers. The role of the Assam Rifles continued to evolve when in 1950 a devastating earthquake hit the Assam region and the force was called in to assist in the reconstruction of the areas and help in the resettlement and rehabilitation of those affected by it.[3] Later the force was once again called to undertake a combat role when, during the 1962 Sino-Indian War elements were used to delay the advancing Chinese forces so that the Indian Army could establish its defence lines.[2] During this time and since then, the Assam Rifles also maintained their peacekeeping role in the northern areas of India in the face of growing tribal unrest and insurgency.

The 16th ended the war in North Carolina. During the 19th century, the Gurkhas attacked Garhwal and drove the rulers of Garhwal down to the plains. Caulder later joined the Third Rifle Regiment of the United States Army as a pioneer, left his native state for good, and by 1817 found himself with his regiment at the future site of Fort Smith, Arkansas, along the Indian frontier. Their elevated status marks them apart from the standard hierarchy of an Imperial Guard Regiment's command, and they often operate as autonomous individuals, counseling and advising the commanding officer of a Guard unit.
