This ship combined firepower, speed, and armor in a manner hitherto unknown. This was the first “all big-guns-ship,” having no small caliber weapons and having double the number of cannon on previous large warships. The designers focused on the “main armament, magazines, and . . ”64 One of the Dreadnought’s supposed advantages was its beam (maximum breadth) of 83 feet, a size so great that, should the Germans have built a similar ship, it would be too wide to use the Kiel Canal, by which the imperial German fleet communicated between the Baltic and North Seas.

Because the ships were enormously expensive, a propaganda campaign had been necessary to secure the requisite appropriations by the Brazilian Congress. In addition, naval officers, backed by nationalist sympathizers, organized a naval league. The Liga Marítima Brasileira was a well-organized lobby formed in imitation of naval leagues in Britain and elsewhere. The Brazilian government decided to purchase two fighting ships from British shipyards that were much more formidable than those originally contemplated of 13,000 tons’ displacement.

Yet the new situation urgently required a new posture. So, on October 6, following the approval by outgoing President Peçanha and Foreign Minister Rio Branco in the Brazilian capital, the marshal welcomed the Provisional President of the Portuguese republic, Teófilo Braga, aboard the Brazilian battleship. 11 Only three days earlier had King Manuel stood in Braga’s place on the great ship. 12 It took its name from a mythical monster appearing in the Portuguese national epic, Camões’s Lusíadas, published in 1572.
