Ten years earlier, in October 1979, many of the same scholars participated in the first conference, "Center and Periphery: The Great Temple and the Aztec Empire," at the University of Colorado in Boulder to discuss the exemplary role of the Templo Mayor in the organization and expansion of Aztec urbanism. Those discussions focused on the temple and economic tribute, human sacrifice and ideology, spatial symbolism in Teotihuacan and Tenochtitlan, magical flight and Mesoamerican cosmology.
