Ten years earlier, in October 1979, many of the same scholars participated in the first conference, "Center and Periphery: The Great Temple and the Aztec Empire," at the University of Colorado in Boulder to discuss the exemplary role of the Templo Mayor in the organization and expansion of Aztec urbanism. Those discussions focused on the temple and economic tribute, human sacrifice and ideology, spatial symbolism in Teotihuacan and Tenochtitlan, magical flight and Mesoamerican cosmology. " Within this setting, which served as our home base during the seminar, we were joined by new colleagues from Mexico, the United States, and Japan.

One of the studies that has shed bright light on the relations among the human body, illness, society, myths, cosmovision, and certain beliefs of the Nahuas, is without a doubt Alfredo López Austin's, Cuerpo Humano e Ideología. Eduardo Matos Moctezuma is director of El Templo Mayor, Mexico City, and author of many works, including Vida y Muerte en el Templo Mayor. Henry B. Nicholson, who wrote "Religion in Pre-Hispanic Central Mexico" for the Handbook of Middle American Indians, is a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles.
