The coastal band is of variable width. In general, it is widest between the states of Pernambuco and Para, and in Rio Grande do Sul. In the remainder of the country, its width is subject to the whims of the Serra do Mar. We call this section the harmonious coast or costas concordantes. In the north the coast joins the Amazon lowlands, which are quite extensive at the river's outlet, relatively narrow between Xingu and Nhamunda, and extremely wide west of the Madeira and Negro Rivers and all the way to the base of the Andes.
